For the Honor of His Name
Don’t raise your hand, but do you remember a time when you asked why God’s glory was so important? What does his honor have to do with you or me? Is it arrogant of God to declare his reputation as paramount to anything going on in his creation?
Nothing Higher
When God assured Abraham of his promise, he swore by his own name because there was nothing higher to swear by (Heb. 6:13). And what he promised, he delivered. There is nothing so true, so honorable, so trustworthy as God’s name.
But deal well with me, O Sovereign Lord, for the sake of your own reputation!
Rescue me because you are so faithful and good. ~ Psalm 109:21
He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. ~ Psalm 23:3
What’s In a Name?
God’s character is tied directly to his name. He has many names, and all of them mean something good to us, including: Protector, Provider, Shepherd, Sanctifier, Peace, Healer, Almighty, to name a few. This great being, wholly other than us or anyone we could comprehend, uses all of himself for our benefit. Jesus, who set everything aside to come to our rescue, is the culmination of all of God’s names.
And this is the gospel!
For the honor of your name, O Lord, forgive my many, many sins. ~Psalm 25:11
Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name.
Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name. ~ Psalm 79:9
You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. ~Psalm 31:3
For the glory of your name, O Lord, preserve my life.
Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress. ~Psalm 143:11
Why We Seek His Glory First
God’s glory is the ultimate factor in all of his actions. Our benefit rests entirely with his honor. God will surely answer and act upon our requests that align with his character. When we want what God wants, he will glorify himself by acting on our behalf! We can pray confidently in Jesus’ name for anything that complies with what he already desires to do. There is no greater reason for us to ask anything of God but his glory, and for his glory, he will do it!
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ~Matt. 6:33
